Plenty of people know how to buy a 4D ticket without knowing how many numbers a draw actually produces, or which of them count as a win. This page sets out the structure.
1. How many numbers are drawn
For the common Malaysian 4D game, one draw produces:

Twenty-three four-digit numbers are winning numbers in every draw; they simply pay at different levels. Deciding you have lost after looking only at the first prize is the single most common misreading.
2. Big versus Small
The same number can be staked two ways:
- Big — first, second, third, Special and Consolation all count, but each unit pays less.
- Small — only first, second and third count; Special and Consolation do not, but each unit pays more.
Big means more ways to win at a lower rate. Small means fewer ways to win at a higher rate. Neither is better; they are different trade-offs.
The exact rates are published by each operator and are revised from time to time — always read the operator's current table.
3. Why leading zeros matter so much
A 4D number is a fixed-length four-character value, not a quantity. 0008 and 8 are the same as arithmetic, but 8 is not a valid 4D number at all.
That is why this site stores every number as a string and never converts one to a number. The moment you cast 0008 to an integer you get 8, and the zeros are gone for good.
4. Common misconceptions
"Hot numbers are more likely to come up."
No. Each draw is an independent event, and past frequency has no effect on the next one. The statistics pages on this site are a record of what happened, not a forecast.
"The same number won't be drawn twice in a row."
There is no such rule. The same number recurring in nearby draws does happen.
"A Special prize is basically nothing."
It is still a win. It simply pays less than the top three tiers.
5. Finally
Understanding the structure tells you what you are buying and where a win actually comes from. It does not improve your odds — 4D probabilities are fixed, and any method claiming otherwise is not worth your money.
